In Laos, there are many spiritual ceremonies for all sorts of life events and they often intertwine animism with Buddhism. One of those rituals is the blessing of the home which is typically done when you move into a new home or are about to build a new one. Have a look.
This is done for many reasons including appeasing any spirits in the vicinity (whether in the land or the house), praying for a happy life in that home, and blessings to the family.
The Buddhist monks bestow multiple blessings while reciting the prayers in pali language. At the same time, the Buddhist monks receive donations for their time.
For the family, it's a sacred event but also considered prestigious as it can sometimes come with considerable cost. The video above shows part of the ceremony.
And if you thought that the blessing of an existing home was quite involved, imagine now trying to do the blessing ceremony while the house is being newly build and about to start construction.
Take a look at this video below as this Lao-Japanese couple in Laos have the ceremony performed as the concrete is about to poured for the foundation and pillars of their new home.
