This year's international New Year's celebrations went beyond anything the country of Laos and its humble capitol have ever seen. A great way to cap off Visit Laos Year 2024.
The streets surrounding and leading to Patuxai were closed off to traffic making them completely pedestrian friendly and walkable. Typically, the streets around Patuxai are amongst the busiest streets in the city of Vientiane. It's rarely, if ever, been closed off to vehicle traffic.
Additionally, several sites were set up for great photo opportunities.
As crowds gathered around Patuxai on all sides, the highlight of the night began - a drone and light show. This marks the first time such a show has ever been done in Laos.
The drones flew to music playing in the background and as their lights flickered on and off, they produced the image of well known cultural artifacts including the Tat Luang stupa, khaen instrument, dok champa flower, elephant, among several others.
The drones led the crowd towards the countdown of the New Year and on its completion came the "2025" accompanied by fireworks that went on for more than 10 minutes.
While large fireworks displays have been done in Laos before, they are rare. The last time a similar display was done was estimated to be 10 years ago when the country was celebrating its 40th anniversary of the founding of the Lao People's Democratic Republic.
