In this Throwback Thursday post, we're sharing a video from Associated Press (AP News) produced on December 23, 1975 which was just 19 days after the official creation of the Lao People's Democratic Republic.
So whether you're a Lao expatriate living abroad or a Lao person living in Laos or may be just a student of Lao history, many people likely have not seen this video before or perhaps not in a very long time.
Consider it a quick history lesson for the day. Totally fascinating to see Vientiane and what was happening during that period.
Entitled: Laos: The Communists Take Over
Length: 24 minutes
Voiceover: English
Description: On December 4th 1975 the Pathet Lao Communists in Laos achieved the final victory of their 20-year struggle for power when they dismantled the neutralist government of Prince Souvanna Phouma, abolished the monarchy and proclaimed a people's Democratic Republic. The new regime, led by Premier Kaysone Phomvihane (AP incorrectly wrote it as Phomivan) and President Souphanouvong, declared that self-reliance and discipline would be the qualities needed to rebuild Laos. Their chief tool in remodelling the state is the political seminar which all must attend. Russian aid is also increasing. The takeover drove thousands into exile and increased tension with Thailand. This report looks at life in Laos now against the background of events since 1962.
