For those out there who are readers on Asian and Lao cultural studies, you'll no doubt have come across books published by NIAS Press.  However, the institute that owned that publishing operation has officially closed down.

Over the years we've read plenty of their books, including, but not limited to titles such as:

  • Engaging Asia: Essays on Laos and Beyond in Honour of Martin Stuart-Fox
  • Creating Laos: The Making of a Lao Space between Siam and Indochina, 1860-1945
  • Contesting Visions of the Lao Past: Laos Historiography at the Crossroads
  • Atlas Of Laos: Spatial Dimensions Of Economic and Social Development
  • From Tribalism to Nationalism: The Anthropological Turn in Laos – A Tribute to Grant Evans

NIAS stands for the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies.  It was a part of the University of Copenhagen's Department of Political Science for 55 years.  It was primarily supported through NordForsk, a regional research council which operates under the Nordic Council of Ministers.

Its final date of closure was December 31, 2023.

An important note worth mentioning here is that the NIAS Press business operations and its assets were  acquired by the National University of Singapore Press (NUS Press).  Therefore, its titles will continue to be printed and published.

Cheers to all the wonderful work that NIAS did to help promote knowledge and academic research on Asian studies.  Here's hoping that the NUS Press will continue their wonderful legacy.
