Artist Series: VM/Religion and spirituality in Laos
In this month's Anniversary Art Series image, religion and spirituality are the focus here.
Animist beliefs pre-date the arrival of Buddhism in Laos. However, when Buddhism arrived in the 1300s and became the official state religion at the time, animist beliefs remained and in fact were incorporated into Buddhist practices. Both sets of beliefs are so entrenched in Lao society that even communist party doctrine couldn't sway the people away from them.
In many ways, these two sources of spiritual beliefs and doctrine are often said to be the sources of Lao conservativeness and laid back nature. They've also shaped local architecture, art, and language.

For 2018, Laoconnection.com celebrates its 20th anniversary. To commemorate the occasion, 3 artists/graphic designers were tasked to provide 4 Lao themed images. You'll see each artist's interpretation of the same theme. Each month, we'll be showcasing a new image that they created. We hope you enjoy them. Let us know which ones are your favourites!
