Pictured here is an ancient statue carved in stone of the naga (
nak in Lao) at the Wat Phu (
Vat Pu in Lao) temple ruins in Champassak, Laos. A few lay followers have placed mini-stupa offerings made of banana leaves, flowers and candles. In Buddhist mythology the
nak is depicted as the protector of the Buddha as he sat and mediated.
