Bolaven Plateau From: ENGLAND
Inquiry:
I am a young photographer and am very interested in learning more about and visiting Mon-Khmer communities of the Bolaven Plateau. I cannot find much information at all about these communities except for brief descriptions of buffalo sacrificial ceromonies and that the Alak, Katu and Lawae women traditionally tattoo their faces.
I would appreciate anything that you may know about the people of this region.
Reply:
The Bolaven Plateau is incredibly fertile, rich, and vast, for it also forms Laos' southern area. The BP is said to be about 10,000 sq km. Suffice it to say there is a large diverse population in this area. In addition to the Katu, Alak, Lavae ethnic groups you mentioned there's other notable groups such as the Laven/Loven, Suay and Ta-oy. As the area is fertile, many grow rice, tea, coffee, cardamom, fruits, rattan, bamboo, etc.
Since your interest is in the ethnic groups, here are some useful recommendations:
Lao Hill Tribes - Traditions and Patterns of Existence
by Stephen Mansfield
The Peoples of Laos - Rural and Ethnic Diversities
by Laurent Chazee
Additionally, typically any book on Laos that has an ethnographic analysis will be able to provide you with an overview of the population and its various ethnic groups that you're interested in.
