It is true that
in Laotian when we speak it tends to be casual or informal. But even
with this there are varying degrees of formality depending on who you
are addressing.
Generally speaking, written
Lao does tend to use vocabulary words that most Laotians especially
those not living (or did not grow up) in Laos would probably not recognized.
In letters or any type of written Laotian documents you are, by tradition,
suppose to use this more 'upper level' vocabularly. It helps to denote
a level of learnedness and it makes the written piece more professional
especially in the eyes of elders.
A lot of people assume
that one would only use upper level vocabulary for speeches, governmental
and business letters, etc. But in fact as a rule most written documents
must be written utilizing this upper grade level of words.
When documents are translated
for clients at the LCW Translation Service for English-to-Lao, the
professional or upper level of vocabulary is used.
You can of course write
documents in Lao that are more tuned to informal conversational levels.
This is only for those writing to close family and friends. But never
for professional letters such as something related to business or
government.
This upper level of vocabulary
is less common (and in some cases non-existent) in spoken Lao with
the exception of formal speeches. It has also been described by some
as a problem for many Lao people because it entails using vocabulary
many Laotians do not use in a day-to-day basis.
Nevertheless, our tradition
dictates that we use it and it would be considered taboo and unprofessional
not to use it in written documents. Finally, it is an important part
of the Laotian language because it adds diversity to our existing
common syntaxes and vocabulary.
Happy writing...
