Volunteer Work in Laos
From: US
- I'm a Laotian/American. I was wondering if it would be possible for me to go to Laos and work with NGOs (or do any charitable activities for that matter) in Laos.
Reply:

It is possible. But there's some difficulty in the sense that there aren't very many openly advertised volunteer (or non-volunteer) positions in Laos. However your best bet is to try to join an NGO that has ongoing projects in Laos.

Keep in mind though that many NGOs prefer to hire only a minimal amount of expats and then hire from within the country they are working in because it is often cheaper, they speak the local language and they are familiar with the customs and environment (not to mention they also want to help educate the local populace by employing and giving them experience.)

Additionally there are strict rules, for example, UNV (UN Volunteers) require a minimum age of 25. And most organizations require expertise in a given field to be considered for employment. Keep trying. We've found some organizations that are willing to hire and don't necessarily require any major requirements - but this is rare.

Ultimately if you keep at it and keep applying to NGOs that are working in Laos one of them will eventually give you a call or return your e-mail.

Some people say it is a lot easier to try to find a position in any new place if you're actually there. Perhaps if you ever visit Laos you can take that opportunity to try to get a volunteer position. Lastly, if you are not able to find a volunteer position it probably wouldn't hurt to donate money or supplies to an NGO (though I agree that isn't as hands-on as being there and doing something).

Gems
From: Australia
- Can you tell me about the rubies and sapphires found/mined in Laos? Although what happened to the Australian couple is regrettable, it did however spark my interest in gems mined in Laos.
And I was curious why are gems green, red or blue, etc.?

Reply:

Southeast Asia is generally known to be the worlds best region for precious gems and minerals, in particular, rubies, sapphires, emeralds and jade. In Laos they do mine the first two gems mentioned. Burma, Thailand, Sri Lanka have high quality rubies and sapphires as well. Jade is also popular in Asia, especially in China. Outside of China, Burma yields high quality jadeite.

What makes them the color that they are? Trace minerals. For rubies and sapphires, corundum determines the tint or level of blue or red. Beryl and chromium give gems the color green for which we call emeralds.

Laos' mining industry, like so many of its other industries, are small in comparison to other countries however it continues to grow. It also accounts for a fair amount of income and jobs.
