Only after 1951
did Laos begin using its own stamps. Before that they used French
Indochina stamps.
Through all
the political changes and events from 1947 through to the 1950s,
Laos, Kingdom of Laos at the time, eventually produced its first
set of stamps on November 13 1951 featuring images of Lao scenery,
beauty and people.
Some wonderful
things about Lao stamps are the artistry and the fact that all the
stamps reflect occurrences in Laos itself. For example when King
Sisavang Vong died special commeration stamps were produced. Later
on, when another king abdicated
and the Pathet Lao took over in 1975, the stamps reflected those
events as well. In another example, when there was dreadful flooding
in 1966 new sets were created the following year. Money generated
went to relief efforts. And what was depicted in those stamps? The
events of the floods and the devastation, no less.
Our interest in all-things-Lao has helped pushed us at LCW into
learning about many different areas and subjects. In this case,
it is the artistry employed in these stamps. The amazingly detailed
artistry by Lao artists showcased in these stamps and the depictions
of Lao life in them is really what catches ones attention. Moreover it has also caught the attention of stamp collectors around
the world. I've even seen Lao stamps from the 1950s that can fetch
as much as $300+ (USD) depending on its rareity, year and image.
In Laos, there
is only one university. However there are several colleges, technical
schools, and training centers that are all under the post-secondary
education category.
You asked about
the university in Laos, I'll include the link. Their website will
answer all your questions. The university has several campuses (Dong-Dok
being the main one) and is increasing the number of programs every
year. The website enumerates those programs.
